November Intermission: Trail of Lightning - Rebecca Roanhorse

Welcome to our November Intermission for Rebecca Roanhorse's Trail of Lightning.

Overall

Kai is cute. And something happening with his eyes??? Questions. Ceraya loves all of these characters and Brieanna is cautious of these characters. We like Maggie (though we think she needs a cooler name).

So far the premise of this book is interesting, but we want to see more monsters. It's cool that this is dystopian sci-fi, which is a nice break from the fae smut we've been reading.

Maggie & Kai

We want more of them together and want more cuteness between them. But we understand that there has to be a build-up. And Maggie probably has some serious issues in her brain that prevent her from being more invested in a possible relationship. Neizghání left Maggie to allow her to be with someone else.

Maggie's dismissal of Kai's flirting made us so ANGRY. GET OVER HIM.

Mąʼii (Coyote)

We thought Mąʼii was super funny because he was so "on-the-nose" with his pointing out that Maggie and Kai are totally into each other.

He gave Maggie a mission, so he was a bit of a plot device. He didn't say anything about what to do with them, but oh well, I guess. Better figure it out, Maggie.

We didn't like how much he teased Maggie about Neizghání . It was unnecessary for him to do, but why???

Tah & the Hogan

We love Tah, such a sweet old man. We like that he kind of adopted Maggie because she needs a friend. She needs the type of friend that won't judge her, and be low maintenance, someone who she can come back to in a few months and just pick up right where they left off. She needs someone who isn't going to be more than friends or weird about it.

Neizghání

Such mystery. Very suspish. We think he will return in this book and probably soon. :) Why did he really leave? Why was the Coyote more serious about Neizghání? What does the Coyote know about Neizghání that makes him push Maggie to forget about him?

Where We Are Now

Tah's hogan has just burned down and Kai & Maggie have just killed LongArm who tried to capture Kai for questionable reasons. And then Maggie realized that she was being very judgemental towards Kai for no good ass reason other than her own trauma.

Where We Go From Here

We hope that the Coyote will come back (as well as Tah)! And possibly other interesting characters and monsters! We want to see more action and what the fuck is up with Kai.

Conclusion

So far we like, and so far we would recommend this book to a beginner fantasy reader who doesn't mind some violence.
