Hi there!
Welcome to our September Finale for Ana Castillo's 1993 novel So Far from God.
Trigger Warning: Suicide, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Death from Disease, Murder, Torture.
There were mostly women in the book, which was kind of cool. Each of the daughters dies a horrible death, and the mother outlives them, which is sad and bizarre but intentional, we think. The book felt unfinished and open-ended, and intentionally unintentional, in that they walked away and they stopped caring. Why?
Well, this book is absolutely written about how Latina women are treated in contemporary America and societies that have absorbed Western colonialist ideals. Yikes.
Conclusion
A good read, but probably for an intermediate or advanced reader.
With love, see you soon!
Ceraya & Brieanna
