Hi there!
Welcome to our November Finale for Kemi Ashing-Giwa's This World is Not Yours.
Trigger Warning: Death, Murder, Poisoning, Gore, Hive-Mind, Child Abuse, Dead Animal, Sentient-ish Slime
Overall
This was an interesting story, but maybe was missing something - not because the concept or the genre was bad, but more because of the execution. It could have been longer, for sure, in order for us readers to understand so much more about the characters and the world. This book definitely needed to be longer OR shorter, we could have omitted a ton of character discourse and retained the mystery of the story in other ways.
Also, why did Vinh, Amara, and Jesse WIN in the end? They didn't deserve to become the GOD of this planet; there was nothing that made us root for their success as a polycule.
Point One: Vinh & Amara
Literally, these two were the worst, most unlikeable people we've ever read about. Maybe they were supposed to be endearing because they were flawed, but they really just came off as irritating, and more than that, really narcissistic individuals.
Their relationship drama was not interesting at all, and more than that, felt like a waste in this otherwise very well-done sci-fi novel.
Point Two: Jesse
Jesse was far more interesting than Vinh & Amara, and way way more psychotic from the beginning. By experiencing some kind of connection with The Grey, Jesse was able to put himself and those in his favor, like Vinh & Amara, in the best position on the planet - their souls would be spared somehow as The Grey destroyed all life and reclaimed the planet.
Conclusion
This book definitely felt like the horror came back in the end, and the fate of this trio may have been well-deserved by the characters mostly because- who wants to be immortal? Like, is this what they've always wanted? Immortality with no predators? Nothing to live or die for? Or is this more of a punishment for them? No autonomy? No independence? Lots of questions were brought up with the end of this book?
Is The Grey a GOD? Is the trio now a God too?
With love, see you soon!
