Hi there!

Welcome to our November Intermission for Kemi Ashing-Giwa's This World is Not Yours (2024).

Trigger Warning: Violence, Weird Alien Shit, Toxic Relationship Drama

Overall

This book, so far, has great world-building on an alien planet. We would like more weird stuff from the planet. For example, what is it like specifically on THIS planet that is different from Earth's nature? The relationship between Vinh and Amara is toxic AF. Jesse is a sweetie pie, and we want more of him. Henry is just this lil guy. We love him. We think that something is up with Jesse because he wants to touch the slime.

The Gray

This slime is super interesting and we also want to know more about it in the first half. We know that it's more like Oobleck and not Quicksand, but other than that it doesn't do some key things that a living thing DOES do. Ceraya does not think it's alive by the rules of Earth, but who knows if this new planet has a totally new criterion for living things that Earth does NOT have? It could be living according to that new planet's rules.

Brieanna DOES think this slime has a mind-controlling aspect to it, especially when Jesse climbs in and describes how his emotions are reflected back to her.

The Polycule

Vinh and Amara are T-O-X-I-C!!!!!! The drama is real with these two. This relationship has a lot of issues with the foundation, and they have issues with pretending to be something in front of their partners that they are not. Vinh has issues with the smallest display of emotion from herself. Amara is ridiculously jealous and has issues with control. Vinh is trying to be the best she can be so that Amara's family can accept her, finally, which doesn't make sense because they were already cast out, but anyways.

And they don't communicate either. It's not going well for these two, so far.

AND why is Vinh leaving during their honeymoon to WORK? EXCUSE ME?! And then we find out later that she kills like, six people, and then comes home to go back to sleep? The fuq?

They don't trust each other at all. Wild.

Jesse and Henry are so much better partners for these two people to be honest. Amara and Jesse keep each other in check, and Vinh can trust Henry and relax around his gentle nature. Before Henry and Jesse were added to the relationship, Vinh and Amara had nobody else to talk to and were trapped in their own bubble.

When Amara suggests they all move in together, Amara is unnecessarily mean to Henry for absolutely no reason. This leads us to the picnic moment when Vinh tells Amara that Henry really isn't that bad. Amara storms off and then they don't talk for an extended amount of time. For some reason, Amara is not willing to be mature about this. Irritating.

Where We Are Now

Amara went through Vinh's diary and found out about the dead scientist scouting group from the other colony. She also found out how Vinh felt about her - which is love, and then Amara felt guilty for thinking that Vinh didn't love her. The other colony is pissed at them and destroyed half of their shit, including the reproduction center, which essentially dooms Amara and Vinh's colony's future.

Where We Go From Here

We truly have no idea what's going to happen, honestly. We thought things were going to be focused on the science and biology of the new planet, but the relationship drama seems to have taken over. Brieanna thinks the slime storyline will take over as time goes on, and become more important to the plot, but because this book is so short, we're worried that the author may not be able to pull that off.

Stay tuned, and we'll see you on the far side of this galaxy!

With love, see you soon!
