The most recent installment of Sarah J. Maas' high-fae, spicy, bad-ass deep-lore has finally made it here! Personal opinion - this one is the best of the lot, so far. Maas has truly outdone herself with this one.
The romance in this one was HOT. And I mean, like, incredibly on fire. The chemistry between Nesta & Cassian is so much more complex than Feyre & Rhys'. And I'm totally serious. Yes, Feyre and Rhys are the OG main spicy-characters of this series, but this romance has a whole fresh spin. The complexity and darkness of Nesta's character combined with Cassian's jovial persistence results in a dreamy couple that stirs up some steamy tension, but the payoff isn't put off for too long either. This is not a slow-burn. This book felt like the last four novels in the series combined into one, to be honest. The long build-up is just shortened, there is still combat and action, and we still end up with a dead-not-dead Illyrian stud.
THE GIRL POWER in this book also feels way more flavorful than Feyre's lonesome curse-breaker story. Having Gwyn and Emerie join Nesta and become the kick-ass trio we all wanted was unexpected. Feyre was cool - but she didn't have a girl power moment like these three did. The dynamic between the three heroines is delightful. The innocent, but powerful Gwyn, the steadfast and focused Emerie, and the fiery yet thoughtful Nesta become the zero-to-hero team that end up kicking Lanthys', Bellius', and Briallyn's asses, and THEN save Cassian, Feyre, and Nyx on top of that. Talk about the coolest girly-pop-group ever. I hope if there is another book it has to do with these three Valkyries.
Just as expected, the last 200 pages of this book were a freight-train of straight-up action. I was so ready for the Valkyries to win the Blood-Rite, but the drama of Cassian killing himself was so unexpected I was shook and knew things were going to take a hard left-turn. After everything turns out fine (which is another Maas trademark) and Cassian isn't dead, that's when Feyre decides to give birth and almost dies herself. I thought it was extremely clever to have Nesta's dynamic character change become the letting-go of vengeance and power. She softened greatly, while becoming as powerful as she needed to be to take care of the ones she loved. I thought that was a gorgeous way to give Nesta a dynamic character arc.
In conclusion, go read this book. It's impactful, a great romance, and you don't necessarily need to read the other ones in the series for this one to leave an impression on you. It contains spicy chapters, thrills, action, drama, magic, and truly great writing.
-Much love,
Brieanna
